Greece's state-controlled bank bailout fund HFSF said on Monday it sold its 9% stake in Alpha Bank to UniCredit for 293.5 million euros ($314 million) after an improved bid by the Italian bank.

UniCredit announced last month it would become Alpha Bank's biggest investor by buying a 9% stake owned by Greece's HFSF. As part of the deal it also agreed to acquire most of Alpha's Romanian business for 300 million euros.

The fund said UniCredit had bought its Alpha shares at a price of 1.39 euros each, representing a premium of 9.4% to the stock's closing price on the last trading day before the initial announcement.

UniCredit said on Monday it plans to become Alpha Bank's biggest investor by buying a 9% stake owned by Greece's bank bailout fund, as the Italian lender also agreed to acquire most of Alpha's Romanian business.

The moves are part of CEO Andrea Orcel's strategy to rebuild UniCredit's fee-yielding businesses, after the bank parted ways with its in-house fund manager under his predecessor in order to boost its capital buffers.

Under a commercial partnership with Alpha, UniCredit will distribute its own asset management products to the 3.5 million clients of Greece's fourth-largest bank.

Keen to raise the fee portion of UniCredit's revenues, Orcel has set up an internal fund products business, dubbed 'onemarkets, in partnership with sector leaders such as BlackRock, Fidelity and PIMCO.

Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras is “quite optimistic” his country will regain investment-grade status soon after its new government lays out its plans.

“We had elections a few days ago, there is a stable government now with a strong parliamentary majority,” Stournaras said Wednesday in a Bloomberg TV interview in Sintra, Portugal. “This government wants to do reforms, so I’m sure that after the declarations that the government will make in parliament, investment grade will be a matter of a few weeks, if not days.”

It’s now eying a return to investment. Fitch Ratings, S&P Global Ratings, DBRS Morningstar and Scope Ratings all currently have Greek debt just one notch below that. Moody’s has it three steps away, but said immediately after Prime Minister’s Kyriakos Mitsotakis win in Sunday’s vote that his reelection is a credit-positive event.

Der Kurs entwickelt sich weiterhin nach oben 📈
